Mattress Cart, Essex Street, Lawrence, MA, 1890s

Two men pose atop a horse-drawn cart filled with mattresses on Essex street in Lawrence, Massachusetts. These appear to be innerspring mattresses, which became popular in the late nineteenth century after steel coil springs were invented in 1857. Note the new power lines that were installed around 1885.
