The Royal Ascot is one of the most prestigious events in the British social calendar and combines the excitement of horse racing with the elegance of high fashion. It was founded by Queen Anne in 1711 when she discovered a suitable location for a racecourse near Windsor Castle. The first race was "Her Majesty's Plate," which took place on August 11, 1711. Today’s Royal Ascot lasts four days, taking place every June, and is customarily attended by the British sovereign. It is a major social and fashion event, and the main event is the Ascot Gold Cup, established in 1807 and run over 2.5 miles (4 km) by horses over three years old.
