Suffrage Parade, New York City, 1915
On October 23, 1915, over 60,000 women marched up Fifth Avenue in New York to advocate for women’s suffrage. Delegates from labor unions and suffrage groups from around the world joined the procession. Line after line of women dressed in white marched up the avenue, holding hands, festooned with garlands and flowers and hoisting huge signs. They marched for five miles, shutting down the city. This wonderful photograph depicts hundreds of courageous women holding up their placards, making history.
