Winston Churchill, Yousef Karsh, 1955

Yousef Karsh photographed Sir Winston Churchill to commemorate his receiving the American Williamsburg Award on December 7, 1955. The award is a "silver copy of the town crier's bell of Colonial Williamsburg, the Virginian cradle of America's democracy.”

Yousef Karsh (1908–2002) was an Armenian-Canadian legendary portrait photographer. He produced the ‘definitive’ portrait of many of the great men and women who shaped the twentieth century. He masterfully captured the essence of his subjects. Once saying, “Within every man and woman, a secret is hidden, and as a photographer, it is my task to reveal it if I can.” Karsh’s iconic photograph of Winston Churchill is on the British five-pound banknote.
